Civil Partnerships

A civil partnership is a formal legal relationship between two people of the same sex and can end only on death, dissolution or annulment. 

A civil partnership creates broadly the same rights and responsibilities for civil partners as those in marriage and is commonly referred to as ‘gay marriage’.  Apart from some obvious differences, by and large the same provisions on the break up of a marriage apply to civil partnerships and for the consequences which flow from that please see our information on divorce.
